When the going got tough in '68 the "tough" got going, headed
to the hills. The theorists an tacticians an philosophers fell over each
other to get out of town, when it got too real. Steve you look radiant in

Protesting pays off. We protested budget cuts to the residents' evening
snacks at the nursing home, which was gross, eating snacks was a simple
and enjoyable activity and they need the nutrition. A whole bunch of aides
put in our 2 cents worth. It actually worked, the good snack foods came
back. It feels so cold out today, around 30 degrees. A few weeks ago 30
degrees would have felt like a heat wave. Anyways there are buds and the
beginning of leaves of the trees and bushes, boy am I ready for spring and

...in regard to "women did all the work" I believe that
everyone did equal parts at different times...some times words are what is
needed and sometimes it's plain ol' elbow grease, sometimes brainstorming
but ALWAYS men and women contributing what ever it is they can and are
willing to at any given moment...balance...yin and yang...positive
negitive...working, standing still, talking, being silent...men &
women. Warm regards to all, Nik
ps. Hammond, I will e to you a small bio and I also edited my piece

Re Turning over in my grave.. “The digger men have been playing with
their lavoliers since '66. The women always did do all the work, all the
men ever did was talk. Blah Blah Blah.”
**
In 1967 at Tolstoy Farm I worked very hard. Working at Morningstar was
difficult. In 1968 I decided to go back into the money community and since
1968 I have been working very physically outside in all types of weather
on the Ohio River. My head and mind stayed at the place that I learned to
be, at; Morningstar. I have lived in the/that moment and the space
provided by life. I did that until my body said quit in 1998. About that
time I started to write knowing that I had to continue to work, moving
forward with my body not wanting to pound the earth anymore.
I understand statement above but is does not apply to me. Work lets me
see the sun, lets me be.

Hammond, Cheeny's relation to Haliburton is well-documented, his
multi-million dollar severance package so he could accept the VP was also
a slap in the mug to all Americans who expected an unjaundiced approach to
business by this adminstration as for proving his energy commision's ties
to all of the above, the fact that he refuse's to release it's
participants and has successfuly quashed any and all attempt's at forceful
disclosure is proof enough that he has much to hide. He needed a Supreme
Court ruling to accomplish it while we were all "distracted" by
the impending war.

Au...well Hammond, the Mutes For Peace was a spur of the moment thing
to basically cover my ass in reference to Police Brutality. I was filmed
by both sides (Press and Cops) before, during and after my arrest, and
made it very clear that I was pretty fucked up.I had the misfortune to lay
down in the street next to a cat who's sign said: "Your Silence Is
Killing Us". It was the same type of brown tombstone sign with white
letters as my sign. (both being painted at the same Wash. Sq. Church
rally)..aint it the way?..talk about coincidences. Basically, the M.F.P.'s
(Me) was a one-man cell. (impossible to infiltrate) and I guess the mottos
would be: "Actions speak louder than words", "Find A
Voice", Say It Loud" and my favorite: "Shut Up"
(Thanks Little Richard)...maybe I could broaden the appeal and make it
less exclusive by welcoming Mimes into the fold. I keep seeing photos of
folks who were on both sides of me, but I turned off the paparatzi by
continually pointing to the hole in my neck with my middle finger. Thats
what pissed the cops off. Hey, a big Hello to Melisa of the War Resisters
League. Later Hammond. Hey, drop in any time. "MUTES FOR PEACE"

The news from Iraq is so awful and will prove to some people that this
war just had to be, while showing all these deaths that, pure and simple,
would not be happening without a war. And now there will never be a way to
know, historically, what the world would have been like without this war.
On the "homefront," my own homefront is very unsettled as I wait
for the hepatitis C re-test results, I want to get that phonecall and then
I don't. So......another Haight Street comfort memory, the Guruda. A
second-floor or loft coffee house with tapestry wall-hangings and sitar
music, what a place to trip.......... And Thanksgiving day 1969(?)
watching Foghorn Leghorn cartoons, laying on cushions I think, at the
Straight Theater. Peace

JAG - The H Contract for putting out the oil wells in Iraq was
blatantly signed and delivered (without an open bidding process) about 3
weeks ago. Cheney was once the VP - and made millions on his stock options
when he wasn't elected along with Bush. These are some of the guys who
were with Dickman at the White House discussing the future concepts of the
US "Energy Plan" - but I can't prove this - well, because the
court rulled that Dicky didn't have to release the names of the Dick-like
greedy ceo's who were being wined and dinned somewhere near the Oval
Office. There were a few other contracts handed out to other nepotistic-polictico-smerf-ceos
at the same time Haliburt. got their share of the "reconstruction
project" under theis administration's ideo-illiogical plan to rebuild
Iraq as "the first free - democratic state in the Middle East"
and smack dab in the middle of more trouble with Iran - Syria and who
knows where it goes when ultra-faith-based maniacs and a blathermouth like
our Defense Minister of Really Dangerous Statements are at the helm of
Spaceship Earth.

Halliburton Handed No-Bid Iraqi Oil Firefighting Contract You still
believe this war is about nothing more then WMD's? I wonder how many other
of Bush and Cheney's friends are benefiting from this war? The US
government didn't even bother to give other companies a chance to bid for
this contract. While on the topic of WMD's you might want to check out
this, about the lack of skepticism when it comes to the media making
claims for weapons in Iraq. Remember Fox and their claim of a
"HUGE" chemical weapons stash? How are we to get accurate news
on this war if the journalist's we rely on are nothing more then puppets
for this administration?

The Mutes For Peace thing bombed out. I only met one mute besides me
and he's an anti-French Republican. No offence ladies,...but In as much as
only female Diggers have expressed outrage on whats getting piped up our
asses, I have concluded that Digger men are all either out in the woods
scrapping moss, tending rose gardens, or saving an endangered dust mite.
That being said Im' dumping the banner and starting the Traitors of NYC.
Remember what those are??..George Washington,..Thom. Jefferson,..you know;
Traitors. Im' getting balls deep in the movement and will only comment on
what comes down after the fact. Its gonna get wild in the streets.See ya'
in the funny papers. Peace on you. Keep the beads baby. P.S. Hey, you all
out giving Karate lessons and sippin' espresso with your accountants or
what?? Where the fuck are the Olema People????

Oh! Thanks, Eric — guess I missed that. I’ll check it out.
By the way, does anyone remember the exact address on Willard? It was
below Carl, wasn’t it? What about everyone’s names who lived there? I
remember three women from the top floor, one was tall, one short, and one
in between! All had dark hair. I can picture them, and even their rooms,
but not their names.

Nicole - Dig this - Asking you about Phil set me on a broader search
and I sent out a few e-mails to old friends still in the LA music set -
and working for Rhino. I struck gold! Apparently Phil doesn't have a
telephone much less a computer but my friend at Rhino says his buddy is in
touch with Phil and he sent me the buddies e-mail address. So - tomorrow I
will contact him and hope to get in touch via carrier pidgeon or something
with "wizard." Amazing worlds we live in eh? And - I just had
lunch with JAG who is a marvelus guy and not a bad snooker player either .
He beat me soundly both games. He is one of us Orange County survivors
Nicole - right out of the old melting pot. When you come our way this
summer we should all get together.

Hi guys getting ready to go for the week end...upstate...actually
playing a benefit for a sick friend (one of woodstocks long time
bartenders and now the manager of bearsville studio, Jimmy Barlow) with
Levon Helm and a good crew of folks trying to help him out with bills...so
I'll read you all on Monday...
By the way... My first real R&R show was at the Long Beach Civic
Auditorium, Ike and Tina Turner, Buffalo Springfield and Airplane...it was
awsome and bizarre when years later I was involved with most of those
folks...I guess there was some kind of destiny thing happening there...and
of course here too with all of us. With REALLY Warm Regards, Your old pal,

Hammond, the Shrine was de-riguer for the Sunset scene, I got backstage
so to speak occasionaly, got to meet Jeff Beck for a while, and his sound
crew, the light show people I only saw on their scaffolding but they
seemed pretty "content" and yeah, Cream, and especially Baker,
were so zoned every time I saw them I knew they were all tweeking between
sets. I found the meth scene their as well.

JAG - (The Shrine) As usual at the time - I was there - and usually
backstage (well, there wasn't much of a "backstage area" but
that is where I usually wound up being friends with the wacky light show
crew (who I met through my other wacky light show friends at The Chetah in
Venice) At the Shrine I saw all of the Who shows - with Arthur Brown' s
flaming headgear, Traffic, the orig. Mothers of Invention numerous times (eg)
and met Clapton, Bruce and Baker (Cream) when the played. Man was Ginger
Baker ever a hard baked case! I was (ahem - at the time) known around
Hollywood/LA as "a righteous speed freak acid head" and thought
I was well heeled to the diverse set - but standing next to Baker's
towering skeletal frame looking into his 60 yard stare really freaked me
out. He was exceptionally eerie.........

Nicole - "Wizard" - how did I know you would know! Yes - that
is my old mate Phil. I met him via his psychiatrist father who doled out
Sandoz ampules to my friend "Jimmy the Clerk ." I remember
sitting with Phili one night and he related a story from the night before.
A sweet young thing had come to Phil's after having dropped her first dose
and wanted Phil to be her "guide." Sort of like asking Svengali
to hold your wallet but nonetheless. Phil said sure - but then after she
came on strong Phil said he had to leave her alone for awhile. She sort of
freaked at the idea of being alone so Phil gave her an emergency phone
number to call if she got into trouble and left (for 6 hours!)and when he
got back she was gone. I asked him what number he gave her in case of
emergency and he had given her the number that connected to: "At the
sound of the beep the time is.......(whatever)"
That was Phil in a brief nutshell.
Any ideas on how to find him?

Eric, when our leaders resort to "Bringing Democracy" to the

at the beach...I think I might be colliding two separate times periods
together...yes, the fog...I think this must be good exercise for the brain

Steve, NY was on CNN to such a degree that I was sure hoping you'd be
on the website not in the slammer tonight!! Seems they've got alot of
people to process.... During the day CNN (headline) showed short clips of
the die-in, shortened to the point of violence-only, like when a movie is
edited down so much that all its violence looks gratuitous. In the evening
on (regular) CNN they had a lengthier piece, also talked about a church
meeting, and an interview with Daniel Ellsworth. What a treat to see a
human being thinking so fast and so clearly.
Lily Pond, a grocer who ran a tiny grocery with his wife, an Oriental
man, used to give me "throw-away" fruit, I can clearly picture
walking out into the soft black night with a box of loose grapes, looking
back at the yellow light through the door of the grocery. It was the same
part of Haight St., I wonder if it was the same store? That grocer saved
me from a diet consisting largely of speed and orange soda, I've always
remembered his for-real generosity. Was that the dented-can store where
you could buy cans the label had been lost from, and it was really cheap
and always a surprise to open the can? It was downtown or something,
someone took me there once, a food warehouse before the idea was as
widespread as today. Peace

Right on, you all made CNN. It is on their website tonight. Latest out
here is Willie Brown, SF Mayor says he may sue ANSWER for 12 million bucks
for the costs incurred by the city during the protests. I also was told
that AssCroft wants to prosecute the NYC protesters for sedition based on
the premise that they hampered the efforts of Homeland Security to protect
NYC from terrorists. Fucking insanity.
I just finished watching Wes "Scoop' Nisker's performance at the
Cayuga Vault replayed on community TV in Santa Cruz. Remember him all you
old SF folks? "If you don't like the news, go out and make some of
your own." A great show. Saturday Night live has been using that
format for the "weekend update" for decades. He did a updated

So there I was, lying on my back in the center of the 49thSt/5th Ave.
Intersection,..watching four helicopters hover overhead like vultures. The
first wave was arrested for just writting on the side walk with chalk. I
was handled with kid gloves due to my scars and I mimed that I had a bum
shoulder. I was among 4 men and 11 women..well...if you could two teenie-boppers
14 & 15)...who were the first to get roped. We were transfered to
buses on the West Side, then hauled down. We were held for 12 hrs and
fingerprinted on the state of the art machines. (Palm print etc) Out of
the 150 in the holding tank at the Center St. local, I was the only one
that actually looked "Disorderly". Cops kept asking me if I had
gotten shot. One said; "You Got A Hole In Your' Neck!...anyway, I was
the onlyone who they asked: "Are you a gang member"(?!!)...I
heard trhat one of the cop buses broak down in midtown and cused more of a
jamb-up than the Demonstration. (Aint it the way??)..The whole gang will
regroup..(I wonder where)..he, he, he...

I remember living on a houseboat, on Portage Bay in '79 and everyone
crowded onto the dock and into the house to share dinner and an evening
with Buckminster Fuller; he was pretty hard of hearing by then, but
someone would ask him a question; and he would answer it so completely
that no one could say anything for several minutes afterward. There was a
blue and gold macaw listening in on the whole evening; the next day, that
bird was repeating samples of conversations and then after whole
paragraphs of words; she'd throw her head back to laugh a jolly belly
laugh like a human being! Bucky had made a very BIG impression on

I lived in the Free City house on Willard Street in the Spring of 1968.
I ended up there because several people I had known in Detroit were
staying there. David Savage was one of them.
While there I met David Lloyd-Jones who was transcribing a Buckminster
Fuller (a guy he had known growing up, if I recall correctly) lecture to
be mimeographed in the free city basement for distribution.
I remember sitting on pillows around the huge dining room table
stuffing Brautigan’s seed packets. I remember dining each evening on a
donated whale (wow — long time ago, eh?) from the freezer.
I remember going to Canned Foods with Paula, and getting
“throw-away” fruit from the little grocer on the corner. I remember
Hilda’s (was that her name?) familia, eaten with milk and honey for
breakfast.
I remember being joined by my friend Mark who was also from michigan
and he ended up going to Black Bear to live and I never saw him again. I
still have photos somewhere of him helping paint trashcans purple to put
in Golden Gate Park.
I remember the women’s rooms upstairs, Judy? Was it? And two other
women who sometimes I can remember their names and right now I can’t.
I remember thinking the upstairs was the women’s part and the
basement was the men’s part and the basement was more interesting,
printing 1% free cards, and stuff like that.
I remember sitting on the steps of city hall while peter coyote read
letters from friends in hawaii who had trees growing right through their
houses; this was a protest day because someone had been arrested for
wearing an american flag so a lot of people were wearing american flags on
the city hall steps that day.
I ended up moving over to stanyan where peter also lived; that’s
where I saw on tv johnson give his “I will not seek, and I shall not
accept” speech.
I remember kirby doyle and his son. I remember tasting zuchinni for the
first time. I remember the heady smell of euchalyptus, and the sea breeze,
and that kitchen, and I am almost transported again.

But politics is the real arena .. time to get organized & throw out

Constitution Party ?, started in Hawaii (believe it or not) that might be
worth looking into .. whatever, street action cannot be the be-all end-all

Good interview, I especially like his dig at Dennis Miller, I used to
think he was insightful and provocative but now all I hear is acerbic and
caustic, not even thought provoking just mean spirited, he hit bottom by
being interviewed on "The O'Riley Factor" promoting the war. I
saw Krasner at the Aladin theatre in Portland with Ken Kesey and Ken Babs,
it was mostly Krasner though reading excerpts from a new book. He
mentioned that most people think he played guitar for the Jefferson

RNA,
Rosemary Woodruff passed away from a heart attack on Feb 7, 2002. I
didn't know her and it was a quiet passing. There were some mentions of it
in the press but very little. She was attempting to archive Leary's stuff
at the time and I was thinking of offering to help, I was working on
similar stuff for the Bergs, but she passed before I got it together. I
remember reading that someone else is or was working on an archive but I
don't know who it is. Here is an SF Chronicle article.
Rosemary Woodruff -- LSD guru's ex-wife
Susan Sward, Chronicle Staff Writer Saturday, February 9, 2002
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rosemary Woodruff, former wife of the late psychedelic guru Timothy
Leary,
died Thursday in her home in Aptos at age 66.
Surrounded by friends, Ms. Woodruff died of complications from a heart
attack she suffered a week earlier.
Born April 26, 1935, in St. Louis, she grew up in that city and dropped
out of high school to marry an Air Force officer when she was 17. That
marriage ended quickly, and she moved to New York in the 1950s.
She told friends later that it was there that she received her real
education, living in the bohemian community of lower Manhattan that was
populated by jazz musicians and artists.
In 1965, she met Leary, a former Harvard University psychology
professor who was the host of weekend events where participants took LSD
at a country estate in Millbrook, N.Y. Leary -- who coined the oft-quoted
phrase "turn on, tune in, drop out" -- had been dismissed from
the Harvard faculty in the early 1960s for his experiments with drugs.
Ms. Woodruff moved in with Leary and was co-host of the events, which
were attended by numerous celebrities, psychologist R.D. Laing, actor
Peter Fonda and artist Saul Steinberg. She became the third of Leary's
four wives in 1967 at an event that the New York Times reported was
directed by Ted Markland of "Bonanza."
Kate Coleman, a Berkeley author who wrote a recent profile of Ms.
Woodruff, said, "Rosemary was known by the nickname 'Ro.' She was the
epitome of hip and beauty. She knew everyone -- Yoko Ono and John Lennon.
She kept in touch with Huxley when he was in L.A."
Coleman said Ms. Woodruff told her that she helped her husband escape
in 1970 from a California state prison where he was serving a 10-year
sentence for a marijuana conviction.
Ms. Woodruff told Coleman that she raised the funds that financed the
escape, in which Leary made his way to a prison roof, traversed the prison
grounds on a cable and then jumped to his freedom on a road outside the
prison.
The Weathermen, a revolutionary youth group, helped Leary pull off the
escape,
Coleman said.
The couple then made their way to Algeria, where they were given
sanctuary for a while by Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver in his
compound there.
The couple's marriage broke apart in the mid-1970s, and Ms. Woodruff
traveled throughout Europe and Latin America before "living
underground in Cape Cod for 14 years" because she still faced a
pending drug charge in Laguna Beach and her former husband had told the
FBI about her role in his escape, Coleman said. Leary himself was captured
by authorities in Afghanistan in 1973 and remained in prison in California
until he was released by Gov. Jerry Brown in 1976.
In 1994, authorities in Orange County dropped charges against Ms.
Woodruff, and she surfaced in Half Moon Bay, where she ran a
bed-and-breakfast establishment for five years until her health failed,
Coleman said. Ms. Woodruff then moved to Aptos and gave some guest
lectures at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Leary died in 1996 of prostate cancer at the age of 75. In Leary's last
months of life, Ms. Woodruff and her former husband were reconciled and
she helped care for him, Coleman said.
Friends said plans have not yet been finalized for a memorial service.

Mark, Rosemary died last year? what do you know? She endured so much:
being under house arrest in Algiers, courtesy of Eldridge Cleaver.
Eldridge later went on to gain fame for inventing the ballsy pants that
had knitted pouches for men's genitals so the guys could let it all hang
out and show their stuff while still legally clad. The prison escape,
visiting her husband in prison, police busts, one while they were making
love on some psychedelic. Leary came to Maui and spoke about how not only
did the police barge in on them while they were making love, but they tied
up Tim's legs with Rosemary's pants. It is not easy being the sould mate
of radical and famous visionaries.

Steve -- I know you gotta go when your heart says go .. but I would be
remiss not to say I have grave misgivings about any action in Manhattan
right now .. I'm afraid the junta in DC wants bad things to fuel their
dirty little war .. stay home, man -- we need you here. OK ?

New york is ripe for revolution from the sound of it, I hope the
bastards don't silence the mass's by ignoring the action and reporting a
"small disturbance" was quelled by patriotic forces in
conjunction with local police. The media have it in their power to
effectivly silence dissent by merely ignoring it. The louder the dissent
the more they seem to downplay the event.
Silent Boyd be sure to duck!

JAG,
That area is still fairly the same as it was. The Rio Del Mar flats, as
they are called, was pretty much built out by then. Aptos Village suffered
some damage during the 1989 earthquake and lost some old buildings but the
village itself hasn't changed much at all. The surrounding areas have
attracted the wealthy and multimillion dollar "trophy" homes dot
the hills and the beach hill area south of Rio Del Mar.

Mark I spent a week on that beach waiting for a check to be forwarded
to general delivery at the local post office, we would walk about a
quarter mile south toward the penisula, and camp so as not to be noticed
by the local police, there was an overpass to highway 1 right where we
camped. My friend lived up the canyon (ravine?) that highway 1 went over,
we would trek up the canyon about a 1/2 mile and his house was on the
right, we got shower privileges but the wife did'nt want our rabble their
at night, new baby and all, we abided and all was well. Really is amazing
how paths cross!

Short notice; didnt think we could give em' the space,..the Rev gave
his best stand up Ghandi, then left me "In Charge" of 500
luddites; abolitionists; union organizers and revolutionaries. In short:
It was a Free Church tonight. They immediatly greeted the
plain-clothes-men, then kicked out all of the Press. I had my Magna-Doodle
and protested on behalf of a Village Voice Sweetie that I recognized. They
all agreed that the Free Press could stay to support but not report. They
then "Voted" to kick another group out and I wrote "Your
Exclusivity turns me off", I then gave the whole gang the finger and
walked. I did however return to help some freaks hang banners in the
balcony. Bottom line?..looks like I may get arrested at the Rockefeller
Plaza "Die In" tommarrow. (watch for my sign: "MUTES FOR
PEACE"). Later. Now,..ah..could ya' please pass the
"Jelly???"...P.S. No punches telegraphed here,..its all over the
news and the cops are gearing up as I speak. (Should be a good one)..I
rolled a bowling ball down the center line of Bowery one night,..but I
cant recall ever playing dead in the street,..Hmmm...

Far fucking out Hammond, I was only an infrequent visitor but indulged
myself whenever their, what I liked was the fact that they sold nothing
but psyshedelics and smoke, nothing bad for the soul, I had to find that
in the barrios around my neighborhood when ever I needed to get down for
real, and luckily I moved around enough that my habit was always on a
part-time basis but even that took its toll. I spent most of my child hood
on a beach and surfed a lot, long boards before the short shit took over,
remember David Nieuva? Best long boarder I ever saw, shot the Huntington
Beach Pier while on the nose! On a 10 ft. wave it was un freaking real,
and also during the Duke Kahanamoko Surfing Contest, he won hands down.
Long time ago, 1964 or so.

Hammond,
I took many hits of orange sunshine. Good stuff. Some of those folks
"migrated" to Maui around 68 or 69 and brought lots of it with
them. Leary's ex-wife lived in Aptos in later years. She passed away last
year.

JAG,
Small world again. I live right there. I run on the beach on mornings
when the tide is low right through the pier that goes out to the cement
ship, which is now a fishing pier, at Seacliff and Rio Del Mar. I am about
a quarter mile up from the beach.

JAG - Yeah that's the place - orig. Bluebird Canyon until the
Brotherhood burned it down so to speak. I was in residence (as a weekend
visitor )and then gone before Tim made the set his west coast stash bag.
"Jimmy the Clerk" made the orange sunshine and he is still out
and about the world (under alias) as are a number of other originals from
those days though many have died - and a few are still on the lam (forever
I am afraid). Just a bunch of surfers with too much acid on there
hands....... great people.
