Cat. No.: CC-233 Full record BibCit: By the diggers. N.d. ca. 4/2/1967. Broadside. Letter size. San Francisco: Communication Company. Imprint: com co (ups). Collation: Gr. ink for bold letters, blue ink text.. Collection: SOLA-o; x(CSL). Abstract: Frames the street as a living commons and invites the people of Haight Street to repossess it through play, costume, ritual, and mutual restraint rather than confrontation. Its central gesture is quintessentially Digger: the transformation of ordinary urban space into a theater of free social being, where “cowboys, indians, monks, troubadors, minstrels, poets” and every other variety of citizen are called to become players in “a play in infinite acts by the people.” The sheet insists that those on the street are not nuisances or intruders but its rightful tenants, and that the occupation of Haight Street should unfold not as a showdown with authority but as an extension of life itself.
At the same time, the text reveals a disciplined ethic beneath its celebratory surface. Each participant is charged with the responsibility to keep hostility absent and to exercise that responsibility “beautifully,” making gentleness itself into a radical social practice. In this way, the broadside proposes a form of collective street action rooted not in aggression but in presence, improvisation, and shared imagination. It stands as both an invitation and a manifesto for the Digger ideal of public life: a spontaneous, open-ended social theater in which the street becomes a stage for free persons learning to inhabit the world otherwise.

Cat. No.: CC-266 Full record BibCit: 4/2/1967. Broadside. Letter size. San Francisco: Communication Company. Imprint: ComCo/UPS. Collation: Multi-color design on white paper. Signed "The Diggers". Collection: SOLA-o(PW). Abstract: A companion piece to CC-233. Where *Gentleness in the Pursuit of Extremity is No Vice* spells out the social philosophy of the action, this sheet renders the same call in a more visual and lyrical key, and distills the message into image, typography, and slogan: “Haight Street is ours to play on till we feel it beautiful to stop.” The flowers, the spacious design, and the playful imprint embody the very sensibility the first sheet describes—an occupation of the street through beauty, improvisation, and presence rather than confrontation. Together, the two pieces function as theory and lyric, manifesto and poster, each completing the meaning of the other.
Note: Lower right corner contains a stylized Om symbol above a short text in Devanagari script, probably Sanskrit, used here as a decorative spiritual element. Its inclusion reflects the Indian religious and visual motifs that circulated widely in the Haight-Ashbury community.
