Hippies Collection
1965-1972 (bulk 1967)

2.5 linear ft.
(2 cartons)

This collection documents the counter-culture movement of the mid 1960's in San Francisco, the "Summer of Love" (1967), and local anti-war and racial equality movements, to a lesser degree. The Hippies Collection includes correspondence, newspapers, little magazines, poetry, monographs, clippings (from mainstream periodicals), ephemera. The bulk of the collection emanates from San Francisco, though some counter-culture publications from outside San Francisco and California are included.

The material comes from several sources. Deborah Wolf donated San Francisco Oracle issues and Communication Company street raps. Some ephemera was originally in the possession of Doug Charlsen. Allen Cohen donated the correspondence in Box 1. The layouts for Steve Walzer and Allen Cohen's photography essay, Childbirth Is Ecstasy, are in the San Francisco History Center collection; both layouts and correspondence probably came to us from the same donor.

To complement the Hippies Collection, the San Francisco History Center also holds news clippings: Hippies (2 oversize bound volumes), spanning 1965-1970. Additionally, researchers interested in newspapers listed in this guide should check our periodical holdings; researchers interested in literary works, poetry and 'zines should see the Title Catalog of the Little Magazines Collection in the Book Arts and Special Collections Center. The San Francisco Oracle is available in facsimile edition in the San Francisco History Center, as well.
